Hello Families of 51 A and B,

Here is the TWAS for the week of October 24 - 28,

We hope you've have a wonderful week; we know that it has been a very busy week for many of our Cranston families with Math Night and the Halloween Howler!!

The students have also been very busy during the days, so if they are a little more tired than usual this week, it is no surprise :)

Aside from preparing for the math night, and being extremely excited about the Halloween Howler, here are some of the other things that they were excited about working on this week:

Preparation for Club Friday (mapping out the school); practicing/learning math skills with games such as Mancala, 'witch's cauldron, ' and regrouping with dice rolling; Mathletics; descriptive writing (monsters); novel study (The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail); compared our assembly performance to a book called The Halloween Play; soccer exercises in gym and learning soccer moves while playing pirates; Earth Rangers Assembly; Eye Openers each morning; learning new songs in music and getting to play instruments; learned about some traditions and a variety of communities in social studies; enjoyed the Scholastic Book Fair; "we had fun"; continued working on switching out our home reading; Daily 5; DEAR; and we had a wonderful guest teacher, Mrs. Prediger, join us for two days while Ms. Klein went off to 'teacher school' (professional development); learned about collecting for Jacket Racket; and last but not least working on controlling our noise level even during really exciting times!

On a final note, as I am sure you are all aware, Monday is Halloween.  The students are welcome to bring their costumes and wear them in the afternoon.  Some students will also be bringing treats which is WONDERFUL; just a gentle reminder that we have a nut allergy in the class (tree nuts in particular — walnuts/almonds etc.); I will bring some gluten free/egg free treats for those that can't have gluten or eggs.

Thank you for reading our TWAS,

Have a wonderful weekend,

Sincerely,

The Room 51 Team

Hello Families of 51,

Students have an opportunity to 'shop' at the scholastic book fair tomorrow afternoon.  They can either write down titles that interest them and complete their purchases when they come to math night, or bring money and make their purchases tomorrow.

Have a wonderful evening,

Kim and Julie

TWAS for the week of Monday October 17 - Friday October 21.

Hello Families of Room 51,

We hope you've had a wonderful week.  We've certainly been busy here.  The students have been working very hard to prepare for this morning's assembly, and their hard work has paid off — they have a WONDERFUL performance in store for their audience!

Here are some of the other things that we have been working on this week:  Fire/evacuation drill; lockdown practice; place value and regrouping in math; learning a new math game for math night; visualization in Language Arts (ask them about pirates); learned to draw owls; learning soccer moves in gym; recognizing random acts of kindness in our classroom; we started home reading; learned to log in to Mathletics; participated in Daily 5 each day (went on P and B word quests, Raz kids, guided reading, spelling words and read to self); the students completed eye openers each morning and did their part to help our class run smoothly by committing to their chosen classroom tasks. There have been some end of the day changes (backpacks) to make home-time a little less hectic for the students.

We would also like to send out a huge thank you to Ms. van der Linden for volunteering her time to help out in the class, and for displaying the students' work so beautifully on the bulletins outside of our room. The students would also like to send out a big thank you to Ms. McBride for all of her help with the 'Owl Song.'

Lastly,  Cranston is collecting all sizes of gently used, clean jackets and snow pants for Jacket Racket. Peace Ambassadors will be collecting items from classrooms.  Please send items beginning on Wednesday, October 19th.

Finally:  "We had fun!" was how the students would like to close.

We look forward to seeing some of you this morning, and hope you all have a fantastic weekend,

Sincerely,

The 51 A and B team.

TWAS: (This Week at School)
Friday, October 14, 2016

Hello Families of 51 A and B

We hope you had a wonderful week!

Our week was extremely busy; it is so hard to believe that it is Friday already!  Each Friday we will be posting a blog (together as a class) called TWAS, which stands for "This Week At School." The students will brainstorm to come up with things that they did in school each week that stood out to them, and then as Ms. Klein or I post on the blog, while each of the students chooses three activities to write about in his or her writing journal.

Here are some of the tasks that we were working on this week:  making leaf patterns/animal leaf art with items collected from our nature walk (thank you so much to all of the volunteers who made our trip possible); math facts; seasons for science; circle of courage discussions (independence, generosity, mastery and belonging); Daily 5; logging into and working on Raz Kids (login information will be going home in the students' communication folders); inline skating; writing poetry; Reader's Theatre (for our assembly); water colour art; classroom chore assignments; library; spot the differences; DEAR(daily 5); compound games.

Thanks for reading and we wish you all a fantastic weekend,

Sincerely,

The 51 Team

Hello families of 51 A and B,

I am thrilled to be working with your children.  We had a wonderful, and very busy, 'first day' together!  Ms. Klein and I are busy planning for the weeks ahead; there are so many exciting things on the horizon.  We would like to do a fall walk down to the pond Tuesday, October 11th, and are hoping some of you might be able to volunteer your time so as to help us do so.  The weather looks decent enough in the afternoon, so our plan is to head out around 1:30pm.  We'll be gone for an hour.
Please don't hesitate to send a email with questions or just to touch base.  I look forward to meeting you all and appreciate any feedback/contributions you have for our class.

Have a wonderful week,

Mrs. McArthur
