TWAS

Hello 51 Families and Friends,

Hopefully you're ready to keep on enjoying winter for a little while longer
. . . it doesn't look like it is going away anytime soon.  I'm sure the children will have loads of fun in the fresh new snow this weekend!

Ms. Klein is away so we are very excited to have Mrs. Luca joining us.  She has been in before and it is very nice to have someone we know and love joining our community for the next 2-3 weeks.

51 A – We start swimming on Monday so please remember to bring towels, bathing suits, goggles (optional) and plastic bags to hold wet items.

The highlights of this week:
This week in music we played with instruments and listened to musical animal sounds. Gym started with a fun new card game that kept us moving, really really fast, and then we worked on long rope skilling; some of us are close to being able to jump in!  We have continued to work on our Arbour Day project making play-dough animals, nests for our trees and informative 'tree' messages that hang from the branches. Wednesday was Pink Shirt day and our class/school was a sea of pink. We created a tree of hearts outside of our classroom and brought messages of friendship to the 'anti-bullying' board in the hub. 51 A continued to work on visualization, predictions and making connections during readings of Charlotte`s Web; poor Wilbur (the pig) is feeling pretty low, but a kind voice has appeared and we're predicting that "Charlotte" (the spider) has arrived to help him out. For 100 days in school we played shaker dice math, math lego – we built different things using 100 pieces of legos. We drew 100 step chalk designs. We also played Roll and Race to 100. Thursday was movie night at school and it sounds like “Moana” was a hit. The students have been working with their new spelling words and should be ready to go for Monday's spelling test. One of us received a special package in the mail all the way from London England so we had to spend a little time finding out exactly where that is:  North, South, East or West. The children found London on the map and discovered that we need to cross a big ocean to get to the one in England but that there is also one in Canada.   We have watched “Magic School Bus Into the Arctic” and it taught us that cold takes the place of warm; you could use hot tea to warm up an engine; special materials can protect your body from cold. In science, we have continued to collect the necessary materials to start building our boats and will be dividing up the resources on Monday. Today many of us helped the kinders with sewing and we had a “Peace Assembly.”

We can not believe another week has blown by . . .
Have a wonderful and safe weekend,

All the best,

Mrs. McArthur and Mrs. Luca

TWAS Feb 15

Hello families of 51A and B,

We hope that you are having a wonderful week; the weather is certainly helping. It was an absolutely gorgeous day for our Winter Carnival.  The children had a wonderful time and so did the grown ups (Mrs. McArthur is the leg wrestling champ — don't let them tell you any different :)) Our station was Inuit games and our students did a fantastic job of taking turns running it!

The rest of our short week zipped by in a whirl of busy learning.  We figured out how to make plasticine float . . . that was very tricky! We saw some beautiful Google slide presentations (thank you Emily and Kyron), and made some gorgeous and super creative arbor day tree art.  In addition to our math stations and writing work, the students had a blast doing orienteering with Ms. Quilley.

Tuesday, our first day back after family day, we will be celebrating 100 days at school.  While we did discuss having a PJ Day party, we're thinking that we'll leave the PJ's for a later date as we did not have time for a class vote and do not want anyone feeling left out, either way.  We will be filling our day with oodles of fun 100 day activities . . . the fun never ends at Cranston these days :) If possible please send 100 items of some type with your child for our art project (macaroni noodles, buttons, paper clips, toothpicks, muffin liners, post it notes, straws, cereal, really anything that you can think of).

We hope that you have a spectacular family day weekend, and look forward to bringing some exciting new learning actives into the class, as we are spending Thursday and Friday at the Calgary City Teacher Conference.

Be safe and have fun,

Ms. Klein and Ms. McArthur

Friday, February 10th

A doubly happy Friday families as another Chinook graces our path!

We have decided that our weekly spelling tests will now take place on Monday mornings.  This will give the students more time to practice their spelling over the weekend and hopefully be less stressful for families.

Excitement filled the classroom and the break-out space this past week in math and science.  Group B continued having fun at the 4 different estimation stations in math: weight, time, length & capacity.  Ask your child about some of the stations they were exploring and the interesting things they discovered.  Group A, in math, continued their work with geometry, building at stations and completing tasks in computer activities.  Both classes continued their inquiry on boats and buoyancy, making predictions and testing objects in water.  Ask your child what they have been doing and discovering in science this past week.

Group B completed their character trait study of themselves, writing about 2 of their physical characteristics and some of their inside traits.  They created pictures of them selves to accompany their writing to display on the bulletin boards.  However, they are scrambled – the game is trying to match the written character trait description with the correct student/picture.  Ms. Klein’s group also completed their comparison of their personal character traits to a character in a current story that they were reading.  They recorded this in a Venn diagram.  In addition, they had to write about a dragon, describing their dragon in detail and drawing a picture of it if they chose to do so.  Group A invented dragons too – a really popular writing activity this week!

Group A has been developing their story ideas with character descriptions and brain-storming with problem “speed dating.” Wonderfully creative ideas have started to come together in storyboard form, and will be making their way into story format in hardcopy and then into Google docs.  The students have also learned how to work with Google slides and are doing amazing things with their passion projects using this format.  They have also started to learn about coding, and can access this cool program from the Cranston Website.

Group B was gone most mornings, swimming at Bob Bahan Fitness and Aquatic Center.  It was great seeing all the kids further develop their swimming and water safety skills!  Group A will be going swimming during the last week of February.

Group A had fun continuing skipping, learning hula-hoop, and playing strategy games during gym.

Next week, in gym, there will be an orienteering course that the students will be participating in on Monday and Tuesday.  Mrs. Quilley has asked that we remind families to have your child dress appropriately for the weather, as gym class will be outside.  On Wednesday the students will be outdoors for an even longer period, as it is “Winter Sport” day.

On Tuesday, February 15 we will be having a Valentines Day celebration where students can exchange Valentine cards.  Below you will find a list of student names to address the Valentines.  The students can create their own Valentines or be store bought.  You are also welcome to send in treats for our celebration if you wish.

spelling

One more thing folks — because of the pro-d day today, the spelling test will be on Monday :)

TWAS

Hello Families,

We hope you've had a wonderful week and are getting ready for a restful weekend :)

It's been a fun week here at Cranston!  The students have been learning about "buoyancy," in preparation for their boat building next week.  They have completed a couple of experiments and are proving to be excellent little scientists.  In math 51A has been working with geometry and our week ended with geometric building stations, using geoboards, tangrams, playdough/wooden sticks/straws and 3D shape village building.  51B was working with estimation in a wide variety of fun and interesting ways: weight, time, length and capacity.  Ask them about the types of "things" they were estimating!

Language Arts is currently focusing on elements of story.  51A students have developed round characters and an assortment of problems for those characters to work through.  They are plotting these ideas out on storyboards that they will use to help with the story-writing process.  The intention is for these stories to become puppet shows that will get filmed in front of green screens and become on-line movies. 51 B was finishing character studies, self portraits.  and venn-diagram comparisons.
In social studies the students have been continuing their study of Inuit people and arctic animals. Their Ted Harrison art is almost complete, little fingers have been sewing up a storm, and the finished projects are incredible multi-medium reflections of climate, animals and culture.
We are also seeing some incredible tech work with the passion project PowerPoints. This is a completely independent task, as it is the work for writing component of our Daily 5,  and we are thrilled by the perseverance, creativity, and independence that the students are demonstrating as they work through the certain challenges that accompany this inquiry task.

As always we have seen many displays of thoughtfulness and kindness and are continuing to reinforce the importance of maintaining a circle of courage philosophy in our class:  Mastery, Independence, Generosity and Belonging, as this is what makes 51 such a wonderful place to spend our days!

Thank you parents for all of the wonderful teachings that you provide on the home front, and the depth of support that is so evident in all of your little people.

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to more great things to come next week!!

Sincerely,

The 51 team

(51 B has swimming next week so please remember swim suits, towels and a plastic bag.  51 A starts swimming February 27th)

ROOM 51B

Hello Families,

An "Acknowledgement of Risk" form went home with your child today in their backpack or in their communication folder.  PLEASE complete the form ASAP and place it back in your child's backpack so it is there on Monday morning when they come to school.  They will not be allowed to participate in the swim program without this completed form.  Please ensure your child is prepared for swimming with a suit and towel, as well as an elastic for long hair if needed   A plastic bag would be a great idea for their wet towel and suit so that it does not get their backpacks wet.

I apologize again for such short notice on this.

REMINDER: There is no school tomorrow - Friday, February 3

ROOM 51B

Good Evening Parents,

Tomorrow there will be a form for swimming coming home with your child called "Acknowledgement of Risk".  This needs to be signed and sent back immediately first thing Monday morning.  We go swimming on Monday and I need your child's form in order for your child to go.  I apologize for the lateness on this.

ALSO, if anyone can volunteer and has security clearance, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Julie Klein
